General Description |
2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid, an organic sulfonic acid compound with a specific structure. It may have certain applications in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields. Its benzimidazole structure and sulfonic acid group give it specific chemical properties and biological activities. |
Uses |
In sunscreen products, it is sometimes used as a UV absorber to help protect the skin from UV damage. In drug development, it may also be used as a key component or lead compound of a drug molecule. However, its specific application and effect are affected by many factors. 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid is generally prepared through a series of organic synthesis reactions, involving steps such as the construction of the benzimidazole ring and the introduction of the sulfonic acid group. PBSA is a water-soluble organic UV filter that absorbs UVB wavelengths strongly. It's often used in sunscreens and cosmetic sun protection products in combination with other UV filters because it offers minimal protection against UVA wavelengths. PBSA can also help protect products from UV light degradation and is considered ideal for clear sunscreen gels. The maximum concentration of PBSA that can be used in sunscreens is 8% w/w. |

In the present study, the influence of 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA) exposure on the reproductive endocrine system of zebrafish was examined, from 6 hours post fertilization (hpf) until 150 days, at levels that near-environmentally relevant (0 to 20 μg/L).
A process for the preparation of 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulphonic acid, characterized in that 3,4-diaminobenzenesulphonic acid is reacted at a pH between 4 and 7 in aqueous solution with 0.9 to 1.5 mol of benzaldehyde per mole of 3,4-diaminobenzenesulphonic acid and with 1.0 to 3.0 mol of SO2 per mole of 3,4-diaminobenzenesulphonic acid, or an agent which comprises 1.0 to 3.0 mol of SO2 per mole of 3.4-diaminobenzenesulphonic acid, is described.
